Contorted Willow

Red, Gold

Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'

A florist's and crafter's delight! Also adds interest to the landscape. Branches grow in a contorted manner having no predictable direction other than 'up'. Dried branches are a popular decorating item as well as used in flower arrangements.

Prefers full sun and a moist location. Can withstand standing water for several weeks. Useful to dry up low, moist areas in the landscape as well. Keep away from septic fields and sewer lines as roots may invade.

Narrow shiny green leaves appear early and have a bright golden-yellow fall color. Bare branches in winter are quite interesting. Ultimate height if not pruned back can be 25 feet. Can be grown as a tree or shrub. Ours are trained as a small tree, but can be easily trained as a shrub. 10-15 feet in width.

Hardy zones 3b-8

There are two "colors" available which refers to the color of the branches. The red has a deep red color and the gold has a light greenish-gold to gold color depending on the maturity of the branch.

**Willows are the easiest plants to grow from cuttings! Place cutting right side up in moist soil or growing media, leaving the top two buds exposed. Keep moist. Rooting will take place in 7-21 days and be ready to plant out in 1-2 months. Can also be stuck in place outdoors in spring if soil is moist and warm. If a tree form is desired, select best leader and prune away others.
