Weeping Birch tree
Except perhaps for weeping willow this is the ultimate weeping tree. It has a quite unmistakable pendulous form. Thin densely twiggy branches cascade from various levels in the domed crown right down to the ground. The shoots are so lax that it is hard to imagine how the plant ever grows in an upward direction at all. However it does grow upwards, often in tiered stages, to about 10 metres in height. Although relatively small it is a strong architectural feature standing on its own or as a clump. Growing next to water it creates a picturesque scene, but it does not like its roots in very wet ground. The origin of the cultivar is uncertain but it was named by Thomas Moore, Curator of Chelsea Physic Garden, before 1887, and commemorates Maurice Young a nurseryman at Epsom (1834-1890).
