Empire National Nursery has fast growing Lombardy Poplar trees and shrub plants for home garden landscaping Lombardy Poplar trees grow fast, six feet or more in a year, and they could use a boost of fertilizer now and then. Some people have had their trees grow 9 to 12 feet a year! Plant the trees in an area where they will get full sun, plenty of water, but away from any domestic water sources, like the sewer lines or septic leech lines (also true for all trees). The Lombardy poplar tree roots will locate and grow to those "open" water sources, such as septic leech lines, clay pipes, or leaky pipes. Otherwise, PVC, metal, or non-leaking pipes will be uneffected by the roots. One trick that sometimes works is to keep the trees well watered, and the roots tend not to spread! If in doubt, either plant them further away from possible sensitive areas, or plant something else.
Poplars prefer full sun, but partial shading is tolerable. Plant Lombardy trees in rows along a driveway or fenceline for a striking visual effect. These trees are commonly planted as windscreens or shelterbelt trees, and often as close as 4 feet apart, up to 6 or 7 feet apart. They will grow up to 100 feet tall, and these can live eighty years or longer.
Our Lombardy Poplars are sterile hybrids of the original Lombardy Poplar strain. Technically, these are called "Theves Poplars", which is (Populus nigra var. thevestina). These are hardier, more insect and disease resistant, and longer lived than the old standard Lombardy (Populus nigra "italica").
