The University of Illinois Plant Clinic in Urbana has reported that sudden needle drop on spruce trees (referred to as SNEED) has been identified for the first time in central and northeastern Illinois.
Because this is a new disease discovery in Illinois, additional testing is underway to assure verification. SNEED has been diagnosed on spruce for several years in Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Kansas.
SNEED is a disease associated with the fungus Setomelanoma holmii. It is usually affects Norway, white and Colorado blue spruce trees.
