The ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is native to the mountains of the western US. It is also known as yellow pine because of its yellow wood and sometimes yellow bark at maturity. The yellow pines grow to 225 feet in height and have trunk diameters of up to 8 feet. The yellow pine belt in California begins in the hills where the average precipitation is 25 inches per year. The species dominates upwards in elevation to an elevation where there is much more annual precipitation and the firs begin to dominate creating the fir belt. The ponderosa pine is very hardy, zones 1-10, 14-21 and H1, but not good in desert heat and wind. This species also makes a fine bonsai or large container plant.
