Paper Birch Trees have a wide range from Canada, Alaska and northern continental United States. They grow in open to dense forests, usually moist lowland to low mountain slopes. The dull green leaves are oval to round with a sharp point at the tip. Usually the trees are about 60 feet tall; however, the tree where this essence was made had 5 leader trunks that were over 100 feet tall. The distinguishing feature is the white bark - often with dark marks and scars - that peels horizontally. Paper birch has many uses. Bark was used to make paper, baskets, and canoes. Wood was burned as fuel. Inner bark and pitch were emergency food, and the pitch was used as glue. Medicinal gum was made from the resin. Today the sap is tapped to make syrup, wine and beer.
