Mugho Pines, also called mountain pines, are European pine trees that grown on high-altitudes. They are found in Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, Erzgebirge, Balkan Peninsula mountains and northern Apennines. They are also seen in some areas of Poland, Pyrenees, Bulgaria and Germany. Mugho Pines can grow from 3 to 20 meters high and have quite dark green leaves. In some places, the young cones and buds are used in cooking special recipes. These trees can also produce “pinecone” syrup, which is like the pine version of maple syrup. Many gardeners plant these trees as makeshift barriers. In the United States, they are commonly used as ornamental plants or Christmas trees. Like most pine trees, they prefer well-drained and loamy soil that has a lot of nutrients. They can tolerate shade.
