An attractive medium sized (15 metres tall) tree with a rounded top. The bark and leaves are similar to common ash, but in May each year this species flowers conspicuously. A good specimen will be transformed to a cream-coloured ball of feathery 'hay scented' flowers for about 2 weeks. In winter the prominent buds, which are velvety black in common ash, are rusty brown. As a landscape feature this tree is at its best in full sun, in complete isolation. It has been used in British collections since before 1700. The natural range is southern Europe and Asia Minor. The descending sap used to be tapped for medicinal purposes. It forms a white or yellowish edible solid, with a sweet to slightly acid flavour, known as manna.
