Also called the California Golden Violet or Yellow Pansy, the Johnny-Jump-Up is a California native that grows in grasslands and oak woodlands. It prefers moist and shady areas but will tolerate some sun. It is a slender stemmed perennial from 4" to 1' high with 1" flowers having 5 petals and 5 stamens. The 3 lower petals have purple veins. The flowers are a the tip of naked stems about 6" long. The larvae of the endangered Callippe Silverspot Butterfly (Speyeria) feed on these plants.
