How to control wasps in your garden

Wasps can cause mayhem in the summer garden, especially if you like to eat outside. However, it's important to realise that wasps are a vital part of the garden's natural balance and devour pests such as aphids and caterpillars.
Early in the season they feed this protein source to their young, who exude a sweet substance for the adults.
As the brood matures, the adults need to satisfy their sweet craving elsewhere and that's when the problems start.
If you have a wasp nest that you can't live with, for example, near the house, call your local council or pest control to deal with it, but remember that they will blast the nest with chemicals that may affect beneficial insects such as bees.
If you can, live with the nest and protect vulnerable areas with traps and/or deterrents. That way you will still benefit from the good work wasps do.
