Heat Stress On Garden Plants
by Glenn

With the temperature soaring near 100 degrees this week in Midwest it is important to remember that your garden plants will be in a lot of stress. The most important thing you can do to protect your gardens is to be sure there is enough moisture. It is also important for you the gardener to stay out of the heat of the day. If you water do it early in the morning or in the evening when the sun is not so high . That goes for garden chores as well pick those vegetables early just after sunrise so you will not get overheated.
The only really bad thing about this weather from a gardening standpoint is that the weeds will continue to grow. You need to be sensible though and take care of your health first weeds can wait.Besides the huge growth of your tomato plants will more than makeup for the bit of extra weeding when the temps return to normal.
If you have not had rainfall for a while be sure you take care of your trees let a hose run with a dribble of water around the base of the tree for an hour to an hour and a half or so once a week you want the water to soak in a couple of inches into the root system.
Lawns in the Midwest are comprised of mostly cool season grasses. If the temperature gets to high the natural tendency of the grass is to go dormant. Trying to water in a drought is not a good thing as it stresses an already overtaxed water system and unless you can get an inch and a half of water over the whole lawn at least once a week it is better to wait till the rain comes back and the lawn will come out of dormancy.
Also with the limited rainfall and the high heat remember to keep that birdbath full of fresh water. The birds will really appreciate your kindness.
