Pumpkin Ash is a relatively uncommon tree of widely scattered distribution in bottomland and floodplain forests of eastern, midwestern and southern U.S. It is an attractive tree with dark green lustrous pinnate compound leaves that turn bronze-red to bronze-purple in fall when the 2-3 inch long winged samaras (fruits) are produced. Although native to swamps, where it may form a large butressed base, it is suitable for cultivation on upland sites that are not excessively dry.
