Finch feeders: Thistle, Nyjer, Sunflower, Tube, Mesh
Tube Feeders are a popular way to feed birds with a variety of seed. A tube feeder can only be described exactly as that – a “tube” feeder! A hollow cylinder with a number of feeding ports and perches, tube feeders come in a variety of specifications – metal feeding ports fight against squirrel damage, short perches to attract small birds and larger perches to attract the larger birds, such as jays. Spiral tube feeders will accommodate all size birds!

Thistle Seed Tube Feeders, also known as Nyjer seed feeders are special feeders with small ports openings that prevent excessive spillage other tube feeders may produce. Nyjer seed, thistle seed or niger seed is a tiny black seed with a high oil content. A favorite of American goldfinches and other finches, it is imported from India, Ethiopia, Myanmar or Nepal. Fairly expensive, however this seed does not germinate if it falls to the ground so it will not produce weeds under your feeder. Thistle feeders are especially loved by finches.

A Sunflower/Mixed Seed Tube Feeder will attract the widest variety of birds. Sunflower Feeders have larger holes than thistle/nyjer tube feeders. They will attract such birds as cardinals, chickadees, finches, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, titmice, and woodpeckers. Great for clinging birds who like clinging and picking the seed out!

Peanut Feeders are very popular with woodpeckers.
