Balsam Fir Seedlings [25-pack shown]What is an evergreen seedling?
Germinated from seed and grown for two or three years, seedlings are often transplanted by wholesalers in a somewhat controlled environment, but require significant care [especially during extreme weather]. Our evergreen seedling sizes range from 5 to 20 inches [not including roots] depending on the species, but most of our seedlings average 8 to 14 inches.

What is an evergreen transplant?
Grown from 2 to 3 year old seedlings for an additional 1 to 2 years, evergreen transplants are ideal for yard or field planting because they are thicker and stronger, and have longer and more developed root systems. Sizes range anywhere from 8 to 20 inches [not including roots] depending on the species, but most of our transplants average 10 to 18 inches.

What is an evergreen seedling plug?
Germinated from seed in "plugs" of peat moss and other highly beneficial organic material for one to two years, evergreen seedling plugs are often transplanted by wholesalers for field growing because they are technically not dug up like "bare root" trees. Rather, they are shipped with an intact cigar-shaped "plug" of dirt into which the roots have grown. Since their roots are already established in that plug of dirt, they can begin putting out new root growth and new top growth fairly quickly. Plug seedlings experience much less stress during transplanting as bareroot trees often do, and can be planted at almost any time of year. Bareroot seedlings, on the other hand, are shipped with no dirt, so they must get their roots reestablished in the new soil before they can begin putting on any significant new growth.

Eastern Red Cedar Jumbo Plug Seedlings [5-Pack Shown]What is an evergreen seedling JUMBO plug?
Almost identical to our evergreen seedling plugs [as described above], the jumbo "plug" of peat moss and other organic material into which the roots have have grown is much larger, resulting in a much more robust root system and a generally larger plug seedling. Our JUMBO evergreen seedling plugs are often transplanted by wholesalers for field growing because they are technically not dug up like "bare root" trees. The "tea bags" holding the plug dirt together will have already begun to dissolve slightly by the time your trees ship, and the roots will begin bursting through the tea bags as soon as the trees are planted. The tea bag itself will disappear completely within a year, and therefore does not need to be removed. Jumbo plugs experience much less stress during transplanting as bareroot trees often do, and can be planted at almost any time of year. In many situations, fall-planted plugs already have good root development before bud break and put on more growth before the heat of summer sets in. They tend to reach a more mature height at an earlier age, and their well developed and undisturbed root systems make them more resistant to drought conditions. Our jumbo evergreen seedling plug sizes range from 6 to 14 inches, depending on species [height does not include the root plug].
