Native shrub common in our local wetlands, along roadsides and in moist hedgerows. Excellent native bird shrub, as many species seek the blue-black fruits in late summer and fall. Also provides cover by virtue of its broad, multi-stem habit. Not as strikingly red as its sibling redtwig dogwood, but more versatile in a few ways: larger overall, more deer resistant, more adaptable to drier sites, and faster-growing. We use this plant around ponds, in wet meadows, and to encourage birds to visit the landscape. Excellent companion for elderberry and alders.
