City of Toronto: Solid Waste Management - Green Bin Program
The Green Bin Program is city-wide! Approximately 510,000 single-family households can now put organics (fruit and vegetables scraps, paper towels, coffee grinds, etc.) out for separate collection along with garbage and recycling.

The Green Bin Program was initiated in Etobicoke in September 2002, Scarborough began in June 2003 and Toronto, East York and York joined in September 2004. On October 25, 2005, 124,000 single family homes in the North York community came on board, bringing the total to 510,000 single family households. Pilots are underway in 30 multi-unit buildings to test the feasibility of collecting organics from multi-unit complexes.

Five of the City’s official recycling containers can be purchased at any one of 33 Home Hardware stores in the City of Toronto, 11 City of Toronto Recycling Container Pick-up Locations or at a Community Environment Day.

Due to strong participation in the Green Bin Program and the plan to expand this organics collection program to more users, City Council, at its June 2007 meeting, approved building and siting two new facilities to process Green Bin organic material. Each facility will be capable of processing 55,000 tonnes of organic material bringing the City’s processing capacity within city borders up to 110,000 tonnes a year.
