Butterfly Bush Cultivar Approval Process
Oregon’s noxious weed quarantine OAR 603-52-1200 was recently amended as it pertains to butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii/variabilis). As a result, only Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) approved seedless butterfly bush cultivars can be propagated, transported, or sold in Oregon. The ODA, in cooperation with Oregon State University (OSU), has developed a criteria and process to approve sterile cultivars of butterfly bush. Cultivars that produce less than 2% viable seeds will be placed on the ODA approved list. In some cases enough data may already be available from creditable studies for the ODA to approve the cultivar. In other cases, additional field studies may be necessary to approve the cultivar.
