All workshops are held at the Fremantle Sailing Club and run from 10.00 am until around 3.00 pm. On completion a Certificate of Achievement is presented to each attendee.

Workshop Outlines:
Bonsai 1 - Introduction to Bonsai Cultivation
Entrance Prerequisite: Basic gardening knowledge or the interest to learn.
$99.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $84.00 on the day)
Create your own Bonsai to take home and learn to choose the appropriate plants, soils and pots. We cover the following in this workshop:
- Bonsai tree and style selection
- Trimming and wiring of the Branches and roots
- Pot selection and composition and potting of the Bonsai. Bonsai after care- pesticides, watering and lighting
Bonsai 2 – Three Bonsai
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of gardening and Bonsai.
$99.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $84.00 on the day)
Create 3 Bonsai to take home using different trees and different styles and learn to choose the appropriate plants, soils and pots. We cover:
- Formal upright, informal upright, slanting, semi cascade and cascade styles. Two trees, tree on rock, broom styles, windswept and exposed root styles. Twisted trunk, weeping, hollow trunk, split trunk and driftwood styles. Literati, raft and jinn styles.
- Designing, trimming, shaping and potting of chosen styles. Long term goals and maintenance of Bonsai.
Bonsai 3 - Creating a Bonsai Forest
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of gardening and Bonsai.
$99.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $84.00 on the day)
Create a Bonsai forest to take home. The workshop package includes:
- Bonsai trees (7 to 11 depending on availability)
- Bonsai Pot for large forest
- Workshop Notes on Bonsai Forest making
- All soils, gravels and styling media as required
- Copper wire as required
- Grafting sealer paste and grafting tape as required
Bonsai 4 BYO – Summer Care of Bonsai
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of Bonsai.
$79.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $64.00 on the day)
This Bring your own (BYO) class is designed to help you care for your Bonsai during the hot summer months. In this workshop we shape, prune, wire and repot trees as needed. We can design Bonsai from the start and we can repair damaged styles. The package includes:
- All soils, gravels, mulching and styling media as required.
- Copper wire as required
- Grafting sealer paste and grafting tape as required
- Notes on Bonsai Care
Bonsai 5 - MicroBonsai
Entrance Prerequisite: Basic gardening knowledge and some knowledge of Bonsai.
$99.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $84.00 on the day)
Create your own eight MicroBonsai to take home and learn to choose the appropriate plants, soils and pots. We cover the following:
- Bonsai tree and style selection
- Trimming and wiring of the Branches and roots
- Pot selection and composition and potting of the Bonsai
- Bonsai after care- pesticides, watering and lighting
The workshop package includes:
- Fifteen 2 year old miniature Bonsai stock
- Eight ceramic Bonsai pots
- Bonsai Soil Mix – prepared in class
- Ground covers, rocks and gravel
- Copper wire, Bonsai food and Bonsai Labels
- Chopstick for training and Bonsai mesh for the pot
Bonsai 6 – Propagation Techniques in Bonsai
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of gardening.
$79.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $64.00 on the day)
Learn to create your own Bonsai from cuttings, seed germination, grafting and layering. You will have at least ten different species of tree and 10 pots of seeds and cuttings to take home. We cover all aspects of germination and long term care. The package includes:
- Workshop Notes on propagation
- All cuttings and seeds
- Propagation soil mix and pastes
- All containers for seedlings or cuttings
- One grafted tree which we will graft in class
Bonsai 8 – Bonsai on Slate
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 workshop or a good knowledge of Bonsai techniques.
$99.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $84.00 in class)
This course consists of two parts. Planting a Bonsai on slate for permanent growth and learning to create jinn or driftwood (dead wood) on living conifer tree. All trees and slate are supplied.
Part 1: Bonsai on Slate
Create your own Bonsai on slate to take home. The following is covered:
- Discussion and Bonsai composition
- Preparation of slate and potting mixtures
- Bonsai after care - pesticides, watering and lighting
Part 2: Create a driftwood or jinn conifer to take home. The following is covered:
- Discussion of conifer limitations and advantages
- Methods for styles in driftwood and jinn
- Start the ‘long term’ carving on a selected tree
Bonsai 9 – Nursery Hunt
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of Bonsai
Part 1 Free
Part 2 BYO $79.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $64.00 in class)
Part 1: A Saturday
9.00 am – 12.00 noon, Free get together hosted by Liana Kopp with the aim of learning what to look for in Bonsai stock when shopping in retail garden centres. Each registered participant will receive a ‘Treasure Hunt’ notes set when we meet at a designated nursery – location revealed upon enrolment. The plan will contain a guide to follow with the aim of finding suitable planting stock.
Part 2: A Saturday two weeks later (for the planting of Bonsai)
10.00 am – 3.30 pm Fremantle Sailing Club
Bonsai preparation and potting. In this part we construct Bonsai using the trees purchased at the garden centres. The format is similar to Bonsai 4 Bring Your Own style.
Bonsai 10 – BYO Winter Care of Bonsai
Entrance Prerequisite: Completion of Bonsai 1 Workshop or knowledge of Bonsai.
$79.00 (Pay $15.00 upon enrolment and $64 in class)
This Bring your own (BYO) class is designed to help you care for your Bonsai during the cool and wet winter months. In this workshop we shape, prune, wire and repot trees as needed. We can design Bonsai from the start and we can repair damaged styles. We also cover wiring and clipping techniques and soil composition. The package includes:
- All soils, gravels and styling media as required
- Copper wire as required
- Grafting sealer paste and grafting tape as required
