In east and central North America this commercially valuable tree attains 30 metres in height. Once it occurred there in vast forests. It was introduced to Britain before 1656. Black walnut produces superb dark brown heavy timber. Young trees do not transplant easily and they hate cold wet clay soils. Frost can also be damaging. This species can usefully be planted in mixture with cherry or larch. In the arboretum it makes a fine free standing specimen in full light. The rugged grey bark resembles oak and the foliage is like ash. In autumn it turns brilliant gold.
Size: 50' to 75' (15m to 23m) tall.
Environment: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, rich and deep soil. Full sun.
