Average Growth Rate of a Willow Hybrid
The average growth of a willow hybrid is about six feet per year, although growth depends heavily on the growth site. In ideal conditions, this hybrid willows can grow up to 20 feet per year. The willow hybrid can be used as a hedge or a tree. If allowed to grow as a tree, and pruned sparingly, it can be (at average growth) up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide within three years.

The total height of the hybrid willow tree is about 70 feet; average canopies are 50 to 60 feet wide. The willow hybrid is easily adaptable to most kinds of soil and moisture, but for ultimate growth, it should be grown where it will receive full sun in zones 4 to 8.

Planting Willow Hybrids
The willow hybrid is a member of the Salicaceae family. The genus is Salix and the species is matsudana. The group is further broken down into various cultivars. Some cultivars will grow faster than others.

Willows can be purchased as a live plant in a dormant state. Plant the willow hybrid where it will receive full sun in soil with a pH of 5.5 to 8.0. Prior to planting, do a soil test to check for the proper pH. If the soil is not the proper pH, amend the soil or choose another place to plant the hybrid tree.

Dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the soil in the pot. Center the willow hybrid in the planting hole, backfill with soil and water well. If the plant you received is a bare-root plant, soak the roots for at least eight hours prior to planting. This ensures that the roots are properly hydrated.

Once planted, stake the tree using tree staking equipment available at your local gardening store. Create a watering ring around the perimeter of the planting hole. The watering ring will divert water to the outside roots, encouraging growth. If fertilizing is needed, use flowering shrub and tree fertilizer or organic fertilizer as directed on the package. Mulch the willow hybrid with compost or pulverized bark to encourage growth and to help keep the soil moist.
