These small edible olives ripen in September and taste very much like cranberries. The olive berries are used to make delicious jams and jellies for Winter snacks. The Olive tree originated in Asia and has been recently found to contain a cancer-fighting chemical called 'lycopene', a common ingredient in the olive.

The Autumn Olive tree can withstand severe droughts, and as an attractive ornamental can stabilize soils and will provide large reservoirs of food and cover for wildlife.

The American Institute for Cancer Research nutritionists report that the Autumn olive contains seven times the amount of lycopene that is found in tomatoes and other foods that are linked to reducing rates of prostate and other cancers. Scientists are frantically working on the mysterious puzzles of how to increase the levels of antioxidants of fruits and vegetables. Autumn olives actually appear to suitably solve this dilemma after further study.

The leaves of this olive are silvery-white on the wider side, and amazingly, the Olive tree can grow twenty feet tall bearing enormous quantities of olives during the autumn.

Birds love the Autumn olive, but netting on the plant can prevent them from getting large amounts of your crop.
