There are many beautiful birds in the world, but the bright orange and yellow colors of the Oriole make them one of America’s more beautiful summer time visitors. Oriole birds are one of the many colorful birds we can enjoy in backyard bird watching.
Orioles birds are attracted to the Poplar tree and Willow trees as well as Ems And Cherry Trees as it is a great place for them to find the caterpillars and insects they like to eat,you may also see them in Orange Trees amongst the flowers and old fruit. Orioles sip nectar from flowers and other flowering plants to get the energy required for their insect catching and caterpillar eating. They like coming to Oriole feeders and will sometimes try to get the nectar from Hummingbird Feeder. Many like to eat grape jelly, and ripe fruit like cherries, apples, oranges, pear and some have been known to eat bananas. While you can watch them eating their nectar straight from the garden flowers, you might enjoy seeing them at Oriole feeders as well.
Some Oriole feeders resemble Hummingbird feeders in that there are little wells that the Orioles can drink their nectar from. These specialized feeders allow the Orioles better access to the nectar. Their bright orange and yellow coloring can be detected by Orioles even from a great distance.

One of the most important feature of the Oriole feeders is that it should be easy to clean. This is very important because an unclean feeder will allow mold to grow on it and this can lead to sick or even death for your Oriels. Bee and ant guards are a good idea so look for them on the feeder or add the bee guard and ant guards to your new or existing feeder.
Care Of Oriole Feeders
The best time to clean your feeders is every time you refill it. Never leave the nectar in the feeder longer than two weeks and less if during the summer as the sugars turn to a different chemical that can make them sick or even kill hem.. You will need to remove all of the left-over nectar. If you put out fruit for your Orioles make sure to change them every one to three days. Clean the feeder by washing it with warm water and mild soap or a half vinegar and water mixture. If you have problems cleaning your feeder and it is not dish washer safe put a handful of uncooked rice into the water and shaking the feeder tube until the excess nectar stuck to the sides is removed or use a bird feeder brush.Make sure you rinse your feeder completely Once your Oriole feeders are clean and you are sure that no mold is growing on them, you can refill the feeders. Make sure the Oriole nectar is fresh and that you have not stored pre-made nectar for longer than two weeks in the refrigerator, if left out one week. Never use Sweet and Low or some other sugar substitute or honey as it can make the birds sick or even kill them.
Oriole Grape Jelly Recipe
There is a grape jelly recipe that you can use in your Oriole feeders instead of nectar. Orioles seem to really like grape jelly in the feeders. However do not put food coloring or other dyes as these can be dangerous to the Orioles. A possible recipe for grape jelly follows. Put 1 part water and 1 part grape jelly, mix them together until it resembles a thick juice. If you would prefer you can use a blender to get the right consistency. After it is mixed to a thick juice consistency use a funnel to pour the grape jelly juice into the Oriole feeders. Keep the rest of the mixture in the refrigerator no linger than two weeks.
Home Made Oriole Nectar
If you want to mix your own Oriel nectar mixture this one has been found to be a favorite of feeding hummingbirds. Take 1 part sugar, 6 parts water, and boil together for 1 to 2 minutes so as to kill bacteria and slow down spoilage. You can add yellow food coloring to help attract the Oriels to your feeder, however I do not recommend it.Cool the mixture and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to begin feeding them. Keep the mixture in your feeder no longer than two weeks. Store in refrigerator for no more than two weeks. If you leave the Oriel nectar mixture out, use it within a week so you will have a week of food in the Oriel feeder before you need to change it.
Another good idea is to place an Orange halve on a twig, or try placing your Oriole feeders in trees they like or near a patch of bright-orange flowers as will attract them.I have had them come to my red Hummingbird feeder even though their favorite color is orange. These few simple steps along with your Oriole feeders are all that is required for attracting the bright Orioles to your garden have fun watching the different species of Orioles.
