Description:
This is a summer flowering allium with deep red-purple flowerheads about 3 inches in diameter. The plant is 18-20 inches tall, with a 12 inch spread. In autumn the seedheads dry well and look great in arrangements. This allium is ideal for containers, mass plantings, borders, and cut flowers. The plant is rabbit, squirrel, and deer resistant. A. atropurpureum has a bloom period of about 3 weeks.
Cultivation:
Sow in autumn into pots using standard loam-based seed compost mixed with coarse horticultural sand. Mix in a ratio of 1 part compost to 1 part sand. Cover lightly with compost, and place outside, explosed to all the weathers. Germination takes place the following spring. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. May flower in its first year.
