Dawn Redwood tree
This relic of a 200 million year old fossil species was considered to be extinct until live plants were discovered in China in 1946. Seed reached the Arnold Arboretum in January and March 1948. Over 600 packets were then dispatched to botanic gardens and arboreta world wide. It is a straight, tall deciduous conifer. The grass green summer foliage turns pink and golden brown in the autumn before falling. The tree thrives best where there is plenty of ground water. New provenances discovered in the 1980's have clear less-fluted stems and they might have some potential as productive forest trees. Dawn redwood is a worthwhile addition to any tree collection. Its summer and autumn colour is a good contrast to many other specimen trees especially dark leaved conifers. The rusty-brown stringy bark introduces another distinctive texture to the tree collection. Occasionally the bark, for some unknown reason, is shredded by badgers for as far up as they can reach standing on their hind legs.
Size: Typically reaches 75' to 100' (23m to 30m) tall
Environment: Best on moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Full sun is needed.
Key Features: Good specimen tree as it is early into leaf and keeps its foliage late into autumn.
