Sierra Vista Arizona Compost Program
Compost Program

Since 1994, the city has operated the only municipal composting operation in the state of Arizona. The city diverts 35 percent of the community's yard waste each year--the highest rate in the state. Those materials are converted to high-quality compost and mulch, which have been returned to the community for a fraction of their retail value. This program won the 1999 Governorís Pride in Arizona Award for Environmental Stewardship. The program continues to evolve with the purchase of new equipment, increasing efficiency. The facility now diverts more than 2,300 tons of material annually and on average has shown a 20 percent annual increase in the amount of materials processed. Public demand for the finished product routinely exceeds available supplies.

Operating Procedures
Enter the County Transfer Station and proceed past the scale house to the compost area. The compost operator will collect any fees that may be due.
Your yard waste must be free of contaminants, and must be inspected by the operator prior to unloading.

Materials accepted include grass clippings, tree and shrub trimmings, weeds, cactus, succulents, and branches up to 8 inches wide and 6 feet long.
