Make Your Bird-feeders from Pine Cones Peanut Butter and Sunflower Seeds
February is National Bird Feeding Month and is the perfect time of year for making your own bird feeders no matter where you live. This is even more special if you have kids. Creating your own bird feeder from pine cones and sunflower seeds can be lots of fun, inspire young ones to use their imagination and continue to provide entertainment and learning as they watch different species of wild birds come to feed outside of the window.

Start by going pine cone hunting. This is really fun with kids of all ages and will help keep them more interested in the whole process. You can choose to build your own bird houses too but creating your own bird feeders from pine cones is natural and good for the environment. Bigger pine cones will give you more room to pack in goodies to attract birds and will last longer. Some people choose to bake their pine cones to open them up and kill off any insects, but this isn’t really necessary.

You will also need string for hanging up your bird feeder whether you plan to hang them from bird houses or tree branches outside, a bowl for mixing, wax paper or pan for laying out your bird feeders, a spoon or spatula and corn meal or oatmeal as well as sunflower seeds and of course peanut butter. Mix the peanut butter and corn meal or oatmeal together as your base mixture. It is probably easiest to use a spoon to then coat your pine cone getting in a much of the mixture as you can. Then roll your bird feeders in the sun flower seeds. You can also use store bought bird seed or even add in a few special treats like raisins and small pieces of apple or other fruits. Remember if you are doing this with the kids it can get a little messy so an apron is probably a good move. Finish off your bird feeders by tying them up with about 2 feet of string each.

Don’t forget to capture these great moments on camera or video! You can use photos to make a scrap book, help your children look up more information about the different types of birds your feeder is attracting online or even create a blog to record the events forever and as a base for posting your other adventures together as they grow up.
