Invasive Herbs to Plant With Caution

Not all herbs are created equally, especially when they are herbs that will run wild with just the tiniest bit of encouragement. Unfortunately, some of these herbs are among the most popular herbs planted by new gardeners. And invasive herbs do just that... take over your garden, often before you even realize it is happening!

Here are the most common invasive herbs:

Peppermint
Spearmint
Pennyroyal
All other kinds of mints
Comfrey
Lemon Balm
Bee Balm
A little know-how can prevent these herbs from become a pest by taking over the garden. First, make sure they are planted in their own containers. If planted in a larger container with other herbs, you need to watch carefully to ensure they don't overtake the other herbs in the container.

Want to plant them in a regular garden? The best thing to do is to keep them in containers, ensuring there are proper drainage holes in the bottom, and then submerge the container into the garden, preferably leaving the top 1-2" exposed above the rest of the garden bed. This keeps the root structure separate from the rest of the garden.
