Cedar Apple Rust is a fungus
The two most common rust diseases are cedar-apple rust and cedar-hawthorn rust. The two diseases have similar affects on trees but they require a different host species. It is a fungal disease. The fungus spends part of its life cycle on Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and the other part on crabapples/hawthorns. Cedars and crabapples/hawthorns must be within five miles of each other in order to complete the development of the rust disease.

What trees and shrubs are affected?
All non-resistant varieties of
Apple
Crabapple (Malus spp.)
Hawthorns (Crataegus spp.)
Eastern Red Cedars
Juniperus Virginiana and other junipers (Juniperus spp.)
