These are common coastal plants on the dunes, but this plant is prospering 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. According to Bell and Taylor (Florida Wild Flowers), they are found inland on disturbed sites. In this case, disturbed means an area cleared by fire - maybe durng the fires of 1998.
